The importance and benefits of good design and design thinking.

Five useful characteristics of a design thinker are:

Empathy

They notice things that others do not and use their insights to inspire innovation. Seeing the world from multiple perspectives, taking a ‘user first’ approach, desirable solutions can be created that meet explicit and latent needs.

Integrative thinking

They rely not just on analytical processes but also the ability to see all aspects, including the contradictory ones of a problem and create a novel solution that supersedes the existing alternatives.

Optimism

No matter how challenging the constraints of a given problem, they assume at least one potential solution is better than the existing alternatives.

Experimentalism

Believing significant innovations don’t come from incremental tweaks, they pose questions and explore constraints in creative ways that lead to new directions.

Collaborative

The increasing complexity of products and services, and experiences has replaced the myth of the lone creative genius with the reality of the enthusiastic collaborator.
